Gastritis

Gastritis is a condition marked by an inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It is not a single disease, but rather can be the result of one of several conditions. Symptoms

Most people with gastritis experience an upset stomach or abdominal pain due to the inflammation in the stomach. Other symptoms may include:

  • Belching
  • Bloating
  • Nausea / Vomiting
  • Feeling Full
  • Burning Sensation in the Upper Abdomen

Causes

Gastritis can be caused by a number of other conditions. The most common causes of gastritis include:

Behaviors that increase gas include anything that causes you to swallow air. Some examples include:

  • Alcohol Abuse
  • Prolonged Use of NSAIDs (Aspirin, Ibuprofen, etc.)
  • H. Pylori Infection
  • Surgical Complications
  • Traumatic Injury
  • Burns
  • Pernicious Anemia
  • Autoimmune Disorders
  • Chronic Bile Reflux

Your treatment will vary depending on the cause of your gastritis.

Treatment

The most common course of treatment for gastritis involves the use of medications to reduce stomach acid. Stomach acid irritates the already inflamed lining of the stomach in individuals with gastritis. Dr. Tabib may also recommend dietary changes and avoidance of certain medications to help alleviate symptoms.

The underlying problems that cause your gastritis may be treated as well. In the case of H. pylori infection, for instance, Dr. Tabib may prescribe antibiotics. In fact, once the underlying condition is adequately addressed, the gastritis usually resolves on its own.
