What is Abdominal Pain?

Abdominal pain, also known as a stomach ache, is a symptom associated with both non-serious and serious medical issues. Common causes of pain in the abdomen include gastroenteritis and irritable bowel syndrome according to wikipedia.org . The abdomen contains many vital organs, muscles, blood vessels, and connectives tissues including the stomach, kidneys, liver, intestines, appendix, gallbladder, and spleen.

Common causes and symptoms:

  • Acid reflux (heartburn)
  • Appendicitis (ruptured appendix)
  • Celiac disease (gluten intolerance)
  • Constipation
  • Crohn’s disease – inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Food intolerances (e.g., lactose, caffeine, fructose, etc.)
  • Food poisoning

Generally, most cases of abdominal pain are not serious. Symptoms may be resolved with hydration or home remedies. However, you should seek medical attention if you notice changes or disturbances in bowel movements, such as chronic constipation, minor rectal (anal) bleeding, blood in stool or diarrhea, that do not resolve within a few hours or days.

In some rare cases, have someone drive you to urgent care or the emergency room if you experience:

  • bloody or black stool that may be sticky
  • being unable to urinate
  • fainting or becoming unconscious
  • pain in the chest, especially around the ribs, extending into the abdomen
  • sudden, severe pain, especially if accompanied by a fever over 102°F
  • uncontrollable vomiting, especially if vomit includes blood

Adominal Pain Specialist

Make an appointment with your doctor if your abdominal pain worries you or lasts more than a few days. In the meantime, find ways to ease your pain. For instance, eat smaller meals if your pain is accompanied by indigestion. Avoid taking over-the-counter pain relievers such as aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) because these can cause stomach irritation that may worsen abdominal pain.
